Service overview

A smooth plaster finish starts with correct preparation.

Plastering is the single most-visible trade in a renovation. Every imperfection, bowed walls, telegraphed joints, blown patches, shows up the moment the paint goes on. We get it right first time so your decorator never has to compensate.

What it is

Plastering is the application of a smooth gypsum finish over walls and ceilings. We work over plasterboard (skim-only), bare brick or block (bonding + skim), and existing painted plaster that's failed (over-skim or full re-plaster). The result is a flat, dust-free, decoration-ready surface.

Who it's for

Homeowners renovating a room, landlords prepping a let, builders needing a reliable second-fix trade, and developers handing over new builds. We work cleanly around lived-in homes, dust sheets down, floors protected, waste removed each day.

When you need it

Book plastering after first-fix electrics and plumbing, before second-fix joinery and decoration. For repair work, blown plaster, water-damaged ceilings, hairline cracks reappearing through paint, get us in early before the issue spreads.

Why a specialist matters

A botched skim can't be hidden by paint. Trowel marks, ripples and sanding-grade finishes telegraph through emulsion, especially in raking light. A well-prepared and properly finished skim takes paint evenly and avoids unnecessary sanding and remedial work.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens if plastering is done badly, or not at all

Plaster failures rarely stay cosmetic. Left alone, they pull paint off, hide damp, and turn a one-room job into a full strip-out. Here's what we see most often.

Blown plaster spreads

A single hollow patch grows as the surrounding bond fails. What looks like a 50p coin today is a foot-wide section within a year, and the brickwork behind is usually damp.

Hidden damp damage

Skimming over an active damp problem traps moisture against the wall. Salts wick through, paint blisters, and the new plaster fails within months. Diagnosis has to come first.

Cheap DIY skims

Under-mixed plaster, missed PVA, single-coat shortcuts, these are the calls we get most. A redo costs more than doing it once, properly, the first time.

Ceiling collapse risk

Old lath-and-plaster ceilings that crack, sag or shed dust are end-of-life. Overboard-and-skim or full replacement is safer and quieter than waiting for it to come down.

Honest, written pricing

Backed by guarantee

A written workmanship standard, backed by the manufacturer warranty information on render systems we install gives you, your buyer or your tenant real recourse, not just a verbal promise.

Insured, experienced team

Suitable for new-build, refurbishment, repair and renovation work.

In depth

Plastering systems we install

Different substrates need different specifications. Here's how we approach the jobs we're called out for most often across Oswestry, Chirk, Ellesmere, Trefonen and the Oswestry area.

Most domestic plastering falls into three categories: skim-only over fresh plasterboard, bonding-and-skim onto bare masonry, and over-skim onto sound existing plaster. Each demands a different mix, suction control, and number of coats. We never apply a one-size approach, the substrate dictates the system.

On older Gobowen and Shropshire terraces we frequently encounter solid 9-inch brick walls, lime plaster, and patches of cement render from past repairs. These mixed substrates require careful suction balancing using PVA or SBR, and sometimes a bonding coat to bridge cement and gypsum. Getting this wrong is the single biggest cause of blown patches a year later.

Ceilings are their own discipline. We overboard tired lath-and-plaster with 12.5mm or 15mm plasterboard fixed to the joists, scrim the joints, and skim in two tight coats. The result is quieter, fire-rated, and visually flat, without the risk of a heritage ceiling shedding in the night.

For commercial fit-outs and new build sites we work to programme, coordinate with M&E trades, and finish to a Level 4 or Level 5 standard depending on the lighting brief. Open-plan offices and retail units are often Level 5 because raking light from feature lighting will expose anything less.

Residential

Domestic work prioritises minimal disruption, dust sheets, sealed doorways, daily waste removal, and finishing one room before opening the next. Weekend and evening starts on request.

Commercial

Commercial work prioritises programme, we work to your main contractor's sequence, hit drying-time milestones for follow-on trades, and deliver to a documented finish standard with sign-off photos.
