Service overview

The right render system protects the building fabric and improves kerb appeal.

External render forms part of the weather-protective finish of a property and can transform its appearance. The right system depends on the substrate, exposure, existing wall condition and the finish you want.

What it is

Rendering is a cementitious or polymer-based coating applied to external walls in multiple coats over a prepared substrate. We install traditional sand-and-cement render, monocouche through-coloured render, silicone render and full external wall insulation (EWI) systems.

Who it's for

Homeowners refreshing tired exteriors, landlords protecting investment property, self-builders specifying the right system, and commercial clients re-cladding offices, schools and retail units.

When you need it

When existing render is cracked, hollow or stained; on new builds requiring weather protection and aesthetic finish; or as part of an EWI retrofit to lower heating bills.

Why a specialist matters

Render performance depends on substrate preparation, bead and mesh detailing, compatible materials, coat thickness and suitable application conditions. Correct specification is as important as the finish itself.

The cost of getting it wrong

What goes wrong with bad rendering

We're called out to fix other renderers' jobs more often than any other trade. Here's what we see, and how to avoid it.

Cracking within 2 winters

Wrong mix ratio or missing expansion beads cause hairline-to-structural cracks. Once water gets in, frost cycles open the cracks wider every year.

Damp ingress and internal mould

Cracked or hollow render lets water reach the masonry. Two or three winters later, internal walls show damp patches and mould, and the fix is external, not a coat of damp-seal paint.

Patchy, blotchy finish

Over-trowelling, inconsistent coat thickness, or starting/stopping in the wrong place leaves visible cold joints. Once dry, it can't be fixed without re-rendering.

Wrong system for the substrate

Spec'ing silicone over a chalky or unsound base coat, or skipping primer where the manufacturer requires it, leads to delamination within a few years.

Our process

Five steps, zero surprises.

Same process on every job, domestic, commercial, single-room or full house.

Why Oswestry Plastering & Rendering

Specific benefits, not vague promises.

Weather-resistant render systems

Manufacturer warranty terms vary by system; applicable product and system information can be supplied with the quotation.

Transformed kerb appeal

A re-render is the most cost-effective way to modernise a tired exterior and lift resale value.

Lower long-term costs

No more repainting every 5 years, through-coloured silicone render holds its colour for 15–20 years.

Self-cleaning surfaces

Silicone render sheds rain, dirt and biological growth, staying cleaner for longer than painted finishes.

Genuine thermal upgrade

Paired with EWI, render adds insulation that can cut heating bills by 20–35%.

Certified, insured installers

K Rend, Weber, Parex and Wetherby systems can be specified to suit the property and required finish.

In depth

Render systems compared

Choosing the right render system is the single biggest decision in any external project. Here's how we specify across Oswestry & surrounding areas, where wind-driven rain and freeze-thaw cycles are unusually harsh.

Traditional sand-and-cement render remains a practical option on suitable properties. Correct preparation, compatible backgrounds, beads, movement details and the final paint system all affect durability and maintenance.

Monocouche render is a through-coloured cementitious system that can remove the need for a separate painted finish. Thickness, preparation and application requirements vary by system and substrate.

Silicone render is the premium option, a thin-coat polymer system applied over a base coat and mesh, available in any RAL colour, with hydrophobic self-cleaning properties. It's our most-specified system on contemporary properties across Oswestry, Chirk and the Oswestry area.

External Wall Insulation (EWI) wraps the building in insulation before the render system goes on. Heating bills typically drop 20–35%, the building gains 25mm–150mm of insulation, and the render finish is identical to a non-insulated installation. Funded under several Shropshire schemes, ask us about eligibility.

Residential

Domestic re-renders are typically 5–10 days on site for a semi-detached, including scaffold. We minimise disruption with phased elevations.

Commercial

Commercial projects are programme-driven with phased scaffold, traffic management plans where required, and main-contractor coordination.
